IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 requires the test-takers to write a summary by selecting and reporting the key features and make relevant comparisons in response to a graph, map, table, or process. The students have to complete the task in 20 minutes and write a response of at least 150 words. The students must be aware of the four criteria on which his or her responses are evaluated:

  1. Task Achievement
  2. Coherence and Cohesion
  3. Lexical Resources
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

A high scoring response will effectively address the above said key factors. A well-crafted response should reflect the important information contained in the question and should be readily reproduced by anyone who reads the response. Students must also focus on the clarity of information presented. It should be easy to understand by the appropriate use of structure, vocabulary and grammar. The sentence formulated must be grammatically correct with the accurate use of articles and plurals.

Three Basic Steps:

  1. Analysing the question

The first step is to look whether the given question is a chart, diagram, process, or a map. Read the question carefully and understand what it expects you to write as a response.

  1. Collecting the Information

Identify the time presented in the question as the verb tense in your response will depend on the time given in the question. Try to figure out the main idea presented in the question and also the general trends if any.

  1. Planning the Essay

The essay must have at least four paragraphs. The first paragraph is an introduction which is effectively paraphrased question. The second paragraph must pen down the main features in the question presented. The remaining two paragraphs must include relevant details supporting the main features and also include comparison if any. If there are any results of effects, students must include it in the essay response.

Students who are preparing for the IELTS exam must understand that knowing the language alone is not sufficient to help them attain the scores but having an understanding about the skills and what the examiner expects from their responses are the two crucial factors deciding the band scores.
